About N-HEMIS
The National Higher Education Management Information System (N-HEMIS) is developed to provide information for planning, monitoring and evaluation for the entire higher education sector.
The system is currently implemented in the Ministry of Higher Education and in the University Grants Commission. N-HEMIS covers information of the entire higher education sector, such as Universities, Technical Schools, Vocational Training Institutes, Private Higher Education Institutes, Labour market information, Cross-Border-Education etc. The system finally produces national level indicators.
The German Higher Education Information Agency (HIS) of the German Federal Government has agreed to provide technical assistance to set-up the N-HEMIS in Sri Lanka, and their counterpart in Sri Lanka is the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).
The N-HEMIS was launched in an inaugural ceremony held on 16th July 2008. The primary objective of the launching event was to highlight the benefits received by sharing data with N-HEMIS, to the stakeholders.
The N-HEMIS Implementation in Sri Lanka is part of the IRQUE Project. IRQUE is a World Bank funded project functioning under the Ministry of Higher Education. It has been set up with the aim of Improving Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education in Sri Lankan Universities. It supports the Government’s long-term tertiary education reform program by enhancing institutional capacities to achieve greater relevance and quality in undergraduate programs, and contributes to building human capital as a key factor in poverty reduction.
The IRQUE Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Higher Education through the Policy Planning and Development Unit (PPDU). The Project is in its fifth year of implementation. Establishing a National Higher Education Management Information System (NHEMIS) is a major component under this programme.
